Which “Base Camp” are you actually hiking to?

The base camp refers to the place where climbers set up their camps for climbing Mt Manaslu, which is located north of Samagaun Village. The Manaslu Base Camp is located between 4,400 m and 4,800 m, depending on the point where you reach it and also the season. The Manaslu Base Camp Hike offers the best scenery of the entire Samagaun and spectacular views of the Birendra Lake and stunning Himalayas.

Route from Samagaun

The hike to Manaslu Base Camp starts from Samagaun and heads north, passing chortens and mani walls and reaching the Birendra Lake (a glacial lake around 3,690 m, roughly 45–60 minutes. Some of the trekkers only trek up to here, but to go to Manaslu Base Camp, the trail now moves via the corner side of the mountains with often paved stairs and moves upwards to the mountains by zig-zag patterns and heads up. Now you are above the tree line onto open, rocky moraine. From there, the trail follows the lateral moraine of the Manaslu Glacier. You will still see the blue Birendra Lake. The final stretch is the steepest and windiest too. Depending on the season, there may be ice and snow as well. Once you reach on the top, around the board written with the Manaslu Base Camp, that is the ultimate destination.

Day-hike logistics

  • Start time

Start from Samagaun by 6:00–6:30 AM. Usually in the afternoon, clouds move up, and you may lose the view, so it is always good to start the hike early in the morning. Starting early gives you plenty of time to climb and return down if your pace is slow.

  • Pace

maintain a slow and steady pace; do not rush and move faster, as you need plenty of time to adjust to the altitude, so it is always good to maintain a slow and steady pace while hiking to Manaslu Base Camp.

  • Turnaround discipline

Do not exhaust yourself for 5000 meters marks as there is a clear signboard of Manaslu Base Camp; this is the exact destination, as it has a wide and big slope area.

  • Leave excess weight behind

Do not pack heavy, just the essential things for the day. Hard shells and warm jackets, as well as water and snacks. Our porter will be there to help you, as they also will help since they don’t go with the duffel bags.

What to pack: lunch, water, and snacks for Manaslu Base Camp Trek?

There are no teahouses and water sources, so you have to carry everything from Samagaun and here is what you may need

  • Water

2–3 litres minimum. Carry the drinking water as altitude and dry mountain air dehydrate you faster.
You may use the filters or water purification tablets and carry them inside your day bags if you have a bladder; that really helps and make you easier to have a sip when you are thirsty.

  • Lunch

Our Guide will take the order for you for the Manaslu Base Camp Hike and tell hotels to prepare breakfast early in the morning.
Recommended pack lunch: boiled eggs, chapati or Tibetan bread, cheese, boiled potatoes, and a thermos of hot tea or soup. Simple, carb-heavy, easy to eat with cold hands.
A thermos of tea or coffee if you want.

  • Snacks

High-energy snack items such as mixed nuts, dried fruit, energy bars, chocolate, biscuits.
Eat frequently rather than eating big at once; this is a good idea as it continues fueling up.
It is recommended to bring the snacks from your home country or buy them in Kathmandu and bring a bit more so you can have them if the camp days are longer and also useful during the Larkya La Pass.

  • Other essentials for the day pack

Down jacket, warm hat, gloves, and a windproof/waterproof shell — temperatures at 4,800 m can be dramatically colder and wind blows faster in a Manaslu Base Camp Area. well prepared for the high altitude.
Sunglasses very suitable for snow and glaciers
Sunscream to put on the exposed on the sun.
Trekking poles to go decent dowm and very useful on a loose moraine sections.
A basic first-aid kit and any personal altitude medication (e.g., acetazolamide, if you and your doctor have planned for it).
Headlamp, in case the descent runs later than planned.

Safety tips

  • Acclimatisation day

The main aim of the acclimatisation day is to adjust to the altitude, and for that, the hike high, sleep low principle works. For that, Manaslu Base Camp is a very excellent choice for pro hikers, and if you are not able to go there, you may try at least half of the way, which makes you prepare for the Larkya La Pass. If you want to skip the hike, there are alternatives too, but you should at least hike.

  • Watch for altitude sickness symptoms

observe symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or loss of appetite. Mild symptoms like headache are common because of the altitude. If the symptoms develop worse, then take emergency measures or descend.

  • Weather changes fast

Early morning the weather is good, and in the afternoons it may get cloudy quickly, so better to hike early in the morning.

  • Footing on the moraine is loose and rocky

The trails near Manaslu Base Camp and near the Birendra Lake are loose and slippery, so it is better to use trekking poles.

  • Stay with your guide and group

Do not run quickly and walk in a group because the trail is not marked clearly and you may lose the trail easily.

  • Sun exposure is more intense than it looks

Use enough sunscreen because the sun is so intense and can cause you to sunburn quickly.

  • Know your evacuation options

Sama Gaun has a Himalayan Rescue Association aid post during peak trekking seasons, and helicopter evacuation is possible from the village in serious cases — make sure your travel insurance covers high-altitude helicopter rescue before you go.

9. Bottom line

The hike from Sama Gaun to Manaslu Base Camp is the single most rewarding day of the Manaslu Circuit for most trekkers — a serious, high-altitude effort rewarded with one of the closest big-mountain views in the Himalaya, done entirely as a day trip with your gear and bed already waiting back in the village. Pack warm, pack more food and water than feels necessary, start early, and let your guide set the pace and the turnaround point.
