On Friday 14 February 2020 , Nepal has hosted a friendly ice hockey match and ice skating event on the pristine Gokyo lake in gokyo region of Nepal which lies on the World heritage sites Everest National Park .



This is the event that had not had before, The Skating was organized for the first time in Nepal successfully on one of the highest elevated lake of Nepal Gokyo.

Gokyo lake is one of the attraction among the trekkers who go to see the gokyo lake and Gokyo Ri as well as Khumbu Himalayan range from there. Gokyo Lake Trek is second busy route after Everest Base camp trek in Everest Region. The Event is organised for the ongoing Visit Nepal year promotional Campaign 2020

In This event international players, including former Olympians, from countries like Canada, Russia, India and the United States took the part. This is the world highest altitude ice skating on frozen Gokyo Lake.

Ice Hockey and Skating in Gokyo Lake, the Friendly matches were played at the third lake of Gokyo among players who took the part of event from the nationalities like the United States, Russia, Canada, India, to name some.

The government organised the event and believes that this kind of event will be organised in future again and there will be rules and regulations as well as it will be open for the business purpose as well.

Government representatives from Finland and France witnessed the hockey match, officials from TAAN, Turkish Airlines, Nepal Airlines Corporation, Summit Airlines, Heli Everest, and Hotel Hikers Inn were also took participation on it. From Nepal government Sherdhan Rai, Jeevan Ram Shrestha took part of that event.

Jeremy Abbott of the US – the 2008 Grand Prix Final champion, Patrick Chan of Canada – a former competitive figure skater and a 2018 Olympic gold medalist in the team event, Elizabeth Putnam of Canada – a former competitive pair skater, Matej Silecky of the US – a member of the 2012 US Collegiate Figure Skating Champion team, Nick Kalisz – an ice hockey player and filmmaker, Laura Kottlowski of the US, a figure skating gold medalist, Tsewang Namgail, Tashi Largyal, Jigmet Rinchen and Tinlass Glasston – members of Indo-Tibet Border Police Team, mitriy Viktorovich Dudarev – one of the participants of 2010 IIHF World Championship, Sergei Evgenyevich Voronov – the ISU Grand Prix NHK Trophy Winner, Aleksandr Chekashev- a former professional ice hockey player



The event was organised for the winter tourism promotions as well as identify the new tourism activities of Nepal. The Gokyo Lake is located at the elevation of 4900 Meter around from where you can see the Mt.Everest and Mt. Chyou very closely

  1. This is very nice to see, apart from trek and climbing Nepal should also give their attention to do ski and ice hokey as well. This is too good to winter when there is cold temperature in Mountain, Like this they can invite tourist to do their vacation even in winter as well.

  2. this is very good effort to promote Winter tourism in Nepal, i hope this will be good adventure tourism activities in Nepal for the adventure skaters and ice hokey players. The permit system should be very easy as well

  3. This is nice activity. I have been to Nepal many times for trek and never seen a ski or ice skating. This would be the best activity for winter tourism in Nepal. This could be also good place to organize the international competitions. This is how Nepal can also attract more tourist in Winter as well
