Is the Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficult?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a Moderate to Strenuous, high-altitude trek, and is recognised as one of the tough trek with a moderate to challenging level of difficulty. It involves 12–18 days of walking, often 5–8 hours daily, reaching a maximum altitude of 5,160 meters (16,929 feet) at Larkke La Pass. Key difficulty factors of the Manaslu circuit treks are High altitude, Larke La Pass, terrain & remoteness, physical demands and potential altitude sickness.

The Ultimate Challenge: Larkya La Pass

  • Maximum Altitude: 5,160m (16,929 ft)
  • Walking Duration: 8–10 hours (Larkya Phedi to Bhimthang)
  • Terrain: Steep uphill, potentially snow-covered pass, and a long, knee-straining descent.

1. High Altitude and AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness):

The most challenging thing in the Manaslu Circuit Trek is the altitude. The trek begins at the low elevation of Macchakhola, 900 meters, then crosses the Larke La, 5106 meters, which is a very significant altitude. Between these two points, very few trekkers experience altitude sickness above 3000 meters. In this trek after the Namrung, the oxygen levels drop significantly. So there might be chances of getting AMS.

→ What are the things that can overcome AMS?

  • In our plan, we have set up an acclimatisation day in Samagaon (3,530m). Also on this day, you can hike higher and sleep lower, which increases the resistance against the altitude
  • Slow and steady, a peace trek can help significantly to overcome the issue.
  • Hydrate the body enough by drinking enough water, 2-3 liters water each day.
  • Eat a healthy, carb-rich diet during the trek, and avoid smoking and drinking alcohol during the trek
  • Nepali people believe that eating the garlic soup helps against the AMS.

2. The Larkya La Pass, 5106 meters, is a challenge:

The Larke La Pass 5,106 m (16,751 ft) is a challenging altitude to cross, and there is a longer distance to cover on that day. Due to thin oxygen levels, rocky trails, adverse weather conditions and many other things, the Larke La Pass is challenging, and most of the trekkers may struggle to cross because this day requires endurance and stamina.

The accents to larke la pass begin at around 3:00 or 4:00 AM from Dharmasala to avoid the afternoon winds at the summit. It is very cold to start the hike that early, and trekkers must have a headlamp to find the trails.

After the Larke La pass, the descent is very tough as well because it is a steep descent down with multiple icy trails and continuous descents, which makes the knees and legs hurt. The total trekking hours may last about 7-10 hours.

🎒 Heading into Sub-Zero Temperatures on the Pass?

Proper gear is critical for managing Larkya La’s high altitude and freezing winds. Don’t overpack—check our essential, season-by-season Manaslu Circuit Trek Packing List to make sure you have the exact cold-weather layers needed.

→ What are the things that can help to Larke la pass?

  • Carry enough water and snacks for the day, not in a rucksacks put on your day bags.
  • Slow and steady, a pace makes the accents and descents easy.
  • Having trekking poles, crampons, and gaiters makes the hike easier.
  • Hydrate the body enough by drinking enough water, 2-3 liters water each day.

3. Physical Demands:

The Manaslu Circuit is a physically demanding trek (12-14 days). The trek covers over 177 km (approx. 110 miles) from Kathmandu, with daily treks of 15–20 km. The routes have steep ascents and descents, mostly. Trekkers are required to trek (5-9 hours) each day. Some days are shorter, but most of the days you need to walk for longer hours, which makes the Manaslu Circuit Trek a more difficult trek than others. Trekkers should have good endurance and physical strength to complete the trek which is a major factors of the Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty

4. Terrain & Remoteness:

The Manaslu Circuit trek is an off-the-beaten-path trek that lies in the northern Gorkha. The Valley is still isolated and has no access to the city, and the basic tea houses and limited infrastructure. Trekkers must adjust themself in to the remoteness of the regions. The Manaslu circuit trekking trails are a combination of rugged, rocky paths, icy trails, and multiple suspension bridges.

5. Weather and temperature:

Unpredictable weather is always challenging on the Manaslu Circuit Trek. In recent years, due to global warming, even in the Spring and Autumn seasons, the weather changes very quickly and very unpredictably and may be adverse to trekking. These things make it more strenuous, especially in high-altitude areas. Normally, the spring and Autumn are the best two seasons for the trek, but there is no guarantee of the weather being stable, which can always make the temperature low and high, and the trek becomes harder. Spring and autumn are best, while winter brings heavy snow, and the monsoon brings rain/landslides

→ Season and character

  • Spring & Autumn: The weather is generally stable, but the pass can still have deep snow in March or early April. Also, the last week of November can be very cold and snow on the Larke la pass.
  • Winter:Crossing the Larkya La Pass in winter is extremely tough and often trails remain blocked due to heavy snow and temperatures dropping below -20°C or more

2026 Trail Conditions:

The road is beeing built to connect the remote valley of Nubri to the road network of Nepal. The Jeep travels up to pangsing in front of the Chisopani Village. Due to the road construction, there might be some disturbances on the trek. Sometimes they have to blast the road, and so on. Also, in the monsoon season, it is risky because of the very loose ground. There are high chances of landslides, so you have to be careful if you are trekking in Moonsoon or even late September or early October.

How to Tackle the Manaslu Circuit Trek: Preparation & Safety Guide

Preparation for the Manaslu circuit Trek makes the trip experience way better, and trekkers will be able to cross the Larke La successfully. Here is how to prepare for the Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty:

    Physical Fitness

Excellent physical stamina and endurance are necessary. Training with long hikes and cardio is recommended.
  • Morning Walks & Hiking:

Start walking daily before you come for the trek, which prepares you for the endurance and stamina. If possible, do weekend hikes on local hills to get your legs used to uneven ascents and descents on trails. You may also do some Leg Strength (squats/lunges), which helps in the trek very much.

  • Cardio & Strength:

It is better to do some cardio exercise (45 mins, 3x week) for the trek preparations and also other physical exercise like swimming, cycling, or jogging to build lung capacity. Don’t forget leg-strengthening exercises like squats and lunges that prepare your legs for the Langtang Trekking.

  • Yoga and Meditation:

The yoga exercise is very beneficial for everyday life and for hiking as well. These help with breathing control (vital at high altitudes) and flexibility.

  • Use Your Gear before the trek:

You need to check your gear in advance and know their comfort before the trek, for exemple brand-new boots on the trek. It is better if you use them in advance. Wear your trousers and jackets during training hikes to ensure they are comfortable and don’t chafe.

Mental Preparedness

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is not the fancy trekking trails like a lower annapurna. It is basic and remote. You need to make your mental preparedness for things like basic rooms shared with other trekkers. You might go days without a hot shower, and the toilets are squat toilets. The toilets are also shared, and you sometimes have to wait for them. Mental toughness is about staying positive when you’re tired, cold, or facing a long climb of stairs. Remind yourself why you’re there: the view from the top is worth the temporary discomfort.

    Acclimatization:

  • Ascend Gradually:

Take your time when you are ascending, relax and do not rush, which helps allow your body to adjust to the altitude better and prevent you from Altitude Mountain Sickness.

  • Acclimatisation Day with Hike High and Sleep Low methods

In the Manaslu Circuit trek, we have set up an acclimatisation day in Samagaun. This helps trekkers to acclimate to the altitude, and during the acclimatisation days, we recommend you hike higher than Samagaun, such as Phungen Gompa or Manaslu Base camp and sleep at Samagaun. This way, you will follow the principles Hike high and sleep low, which helps you to prevent altitude mountain sickness.

  • Listen to Your Body:

Pay attention to any symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headache, dizziness, or nausea, and rest when needed and tell your guide about this immediately.

  • Stay Hydrated:

Drink plenty of water throughout the trek to help your body prepare for adjusting to the acclimatisation.

    Packing Wisely:

  • Lightweight Backpack:

Pack only the essential gear and reduce the weight of backpacks.

  • Water Purification:

Buy water purification tablets or a filter to ensure safe drinking water.

  • Sun Protection:

Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
